Kiran shook her head and her hands trembled as she raised them to the canvas, as she tried to stroke away the pain. Her eyes could not bear to see anymore and she looked out of the bay windows, at the trees, at the spot where she had sat with Ashley, at the place where she imagined Marge and Sarah walking away, hand in hand, Ashley’s little sister clinging on to her mother.

Kiran thought they had worked through the guilt Ashley felt over Sarah’s death, that Marge had used so effectively on her. Or did Ashley have a different guilt she had not shared?
